RESONANCE & PROJECTION

1. Resonance Effectivity

A good instrument is a good sound box. A musician's energy is effectively converted into musical tones. You can play "piano" precisely and consciously control large "forte". In the case of cheap "junk" instruments, they cannot effectively produce resonance.

2. Dynamics & Sound Character

Pure metal or glass can produce a pure resonance. A bad resonance body contains acoustic defects such as a crack or a foreign body in a bell or wine glass, which actively counteract the resonance force.

The counteraction continues to grow with increasing energy. The noise component increases. At a certain point the instrument stops taking in air and the musician feels blocked. Large bore instruments can still take in air, but it just sounds roughly like a metal pail like a cheap "junk" trombone.

In contrast, a good instrument can absorb air and energy from musicians almost endlessly. The sound unfolds "dark" and without any noise such as B, G, Z. At higher volume, the core of the sound becomes more intense, more compact, more stable, but still remains warm and round. With a certain volume, additional shine, color, similar to the reflection of gold bars or magma, is extended into the room like a fragrance. Some instruments are characteristic, as fine metal brillance around the sound center "Sizzling".

3. Concert Hall & Church

The announcement in the great cathedral is fuzzy and difficult to understand without a microphone. If the instrument does not have a clear sound center, musicians cannot express a clear message in the thick soup of air in the church or in the concert hall. To the audience, the sounds appear as blurred as cotton wool.

Violin, oboe, piccolo trumpet can sound squeaky in the living room, but in large churches they sound round and warm to the last corner.

4. On Stage

Saxophone is the star of wind instruments in the modern electric band. Such an electrically amplified stage can be very loud. The vocal and other instruments are amplified through the monitor for musicians to hear. There are many tones and frequencies all over the stage. The microphone for saxophone picks up everything as well as background noise. Since the saxophone (wood winds) does not have a single sound opening like brass wind instruments, it is not possible to pick up all sounds in one microphone. An instrument with a very effective sound box and an intense sound center can clearly reproduce the musical message through loudspeakers. For instruments with an indistinct sound center, the microphone only amplifies the noises that electrical instruments do not have, often more noise than musical tones.
